Atwood present the Commander Essay Example
Atwood present the Commander Essay Example Atwood present the Commander Essay Atwood present the Commander Essay Essay Topic: The Handmaids Tale In A Handmaids Tale the Commander is the most powerful authority figure in Offreds world. He is a high-ranking governement official and he is the head of the household that Offred has been assigned to. The Handmaids are defined solely through their bodies and their Commander and in chapter 15 we see why. The chapter begins with the Commander knocking at the door, the knock is prescribed, this gives the chapter an isolated, clinical feel now that the Commander is entering his wifes territory Atwoods use of language here is very effective, she says how the Commander is supposed to ask permisson to enter and how Serena Joy likes to keep him waiting. This shows the reader the awkwardness and power in the Commander his wifes relationship. Serena Joy in the next chapter is about to have her role as a wife violated, she is taking advantage of the power she has over the Household because in the next chapter she is powerless to the Ceremony. Atwood then uses a rhetorical question Who knows what she said to him, over the silver-encrusted dinner table? Or didnt say to keep the reader interested and get the reader thinking about the relationship between this husband and wife. The Commander is described by Atwood as a museum guard in his black uniform. he is then describes as a semi-retired man, genial but wary, killing time. But only at first glance, this is important as Atwood is hinting to the reader that all is not what is seems at first glance not just in this chapter but throughout the novel. Atwoods description of the Commanders straight, neatly brushed silver hair his sober posture shoulders a little stooped, the description of his shoulders suggests that not only is the Commander feeling awkward but embarrassed aswell. The description continues with the Commanders eyes being described as falsely innocuous, meaning falsely harmless, this adds to the the feeling that nothing is what it appears to be. The Commander looks at the household as though they are inventory something he inherited.. he hasnt figured out what to do with us what we are worth, the Commander thinks of these people, his wife, chauffeur, handmaid and house servants as objects, this adds to the emotionless atmosphere to the chapter. The relationship between the Comander and his wife is revealed again in this chapter, Atwood describes how the Commander nods, in the direction of Serena Joy, who does not make a sound, there is a lack of communication between them and it is on full view for the rest of the household to see. The Commander proceeds to unlock an ornate box, the word ornate is perfect for this box and chapter as everyone is in a complicated situation. The contents of this box is a bible which is kept locked up the way people kept tea locked up, tea was very expensive therefore precious, the Bible can also be seen as precious because this society is based on Biblical teachings. However the Bible is almost described as dangerous to this society, it is an incendiary device.. who knows what we would make of it. The Commander reads this device and the household are expectant here comes our bedtime story, this adds to this view of first apperances are dangerous, this falsely innocuous man is now reading his household a bedtime story from the Bible. Atwood again, describes the Commander as a shoemaker in an old fairytale book, she asks another rhetorical question to make the reader think again about the impression of the Commander: Is there no end to his disguises, of benevolence? Atwood then uses language to evoke sympathy for the Commander, To be a man, watched by women. It must be entirely strange, she also uses the repetition of To have them to evoke sypathy for example, To have them watching him all the time To have them flinch when he moves.. To have them sizing him up. Atwoods use of effective language doesnt stop there, she then goes on to say how the Commander is like a sock over a foot, To have them putting him on, trying him out.. this could reflect Offreds situation, as she is just an object who is tried out. Still continuing with the like a sock over a foot similie Atwood uses adjectives such as expands bulging grows big and they may also reflect the Handmaids as these are words usually associated with pregnancy. The Commander is describes as on a journey into darkness that is composed of women, a woman, who can see in darkness while he himself strains blindly forward. This suggests several things, the journey of darkness could be the view of this dystopian society which the Commander is clearly blind to,(he fulfills his legal obligations within his household but does so without conviction) and the only person who can see in darkness is a woman, this could be Offred, as she is so far seen to be against this society. Atwood uses language to create an intense and uncomfortable atmosphere, for example, She watched him from within Were all watching him since he has entered the room the Commander has been watched by all. Again, Atwood uses a similie to describe the Commander: he is like a boot Hard on the outside, giving shape to a pulp of a tenderfoot, this is another effective use of language in Atwoods presentation of the Commander. The final use of repetition in Chapter 15 is very effective, Atwood is still trying to evoke sympathy Still it must be hell, to be a man, like that but then she corrects herself It must be just fine It must be hell It must be very silent. Atwood is showing that she has not made a decision about whether the Commander is a hard man who is emotionless, if he was this situation would be just fine, however if not then his situation must be hell.

Miranda trial essays
Miranda trial essays On March 2,1963 it was a normal day at work for eight-teen year old Rebecca Johnson. Rebecca had just finished up her last duties at the movie theaters refreshment counter and left for the bus stop around 11:30 PM. She got off the bus at 12:10 and began her short walk home. On her walk, a car sharply pulled out of a driveway and almost hit her. A man jumped out of the car and grabbed her. The man threw Rebecca in the back seat of his car and tied her hands and feet together with rope. Then he drove to the Arizona desert where he raped her. Two hours later, the man returned Rebecca back to her neighborhood. She raced home and told her sister what had just happened. She detailed her night to the police also. Rebecca described the attacker and his car to the police. (3/7-11) At first, the officers doubted whether Rebecca was telling the truth because her statements were sometimes inconsistent. On March 9, 1963 at about 11:45 PM, Rebeccas brother-in-law noticed a car matching his sisters description and he wrote down the license plate number. Four days later, detectives ran a check on the number that was giving to them by Rebeccas brother-in-law, which lead to a car matching Rebeccas description indeed. The owner of the car, Ernesto Miranda was taken into custody. That same day, at the police station, Rebecca picked out Miranda from a lineup. After being picked, Ernesto was sent to the interrogation room where Officer Cooley and Officer Young began questioning Miranda. (3/11-13) In the room, Ernesto was not told that he had the right to an attorney; and there is dispute as to whether he was told he had the right to remain silent. After a couple of hours of questioning, Miranda signed a confession. In June 1963, the trial in the case of the state of Arizona v. Ernesto Miranda got under way in an Arizona State Court. Mirandas lawyer was seventy-three year old Alvin Moore, whom w...

DO WE NEED FEMINISM NOW THAT WOMEN ARE FREE Essay
DO WE NEED FEMINISM NOW THAT WOMEN ARE FREE - Essay Example As a means of answering such a question, the analysis will first consider what those who support a further form of feminism might say with regards to the prospect that the future holds and what extant need may still exist for feminism. Once this has been discussed with a level of depth and clarity, the analysis will then move on to some of the reasons for why such an approach necessarily guarantees that there will be perennial requirements for further feminism within the world. Some of these requirements are concentric upon the religious mores that are currently exhibited within the current system; whereas others are merely an example of history and the cultural determinism that has helped to define the United States in the way that it is. Finally, the last portion of the analysis will argue the position of the author with relation to this issue. Individuals that resist certain types of feminism put forward the understanding that the ââ¬Å"appropriatenessâ⬠of the feminist approach is predicated upon the viewpoints that it espouses. Naturally, some more radical types of feminism do not maximize the interests of women as much as they seek to minimize and demean the role of men throughout society. Within such an understanding, the more militant versions of feminism can be dispelled as illogical and not worthy of further analysis within this paper. Although this is something of a categorical approach, there are too many types of feminism and too many different approaches that do require a level of analysis to spend precious space within this brief discussion analyzing the more militant versions of this worldview (Valenti, 2012). The underlying reason for focusing upon the more mainstream branches of feminism is predicated upon the fact that it is the belief of this author, as well as the near categorical belief of a litan y of

Justice And Injustice In The State Of Nature Essay
Justice And Injustice In The State Of Nature Essay According to Hobbes, in the State of Nature there is no property and both justice and injustice are impossible, whereas for Locke both property and justice and injustice exist before the Social Contract. Explain how each philosopher reaches his conclusion. Then make an evaluation. Which philosopher has the better argument? Which philosopher has the better position? Hobbes claimed that there is no property, justice and injustice in the State of Nature. To formulate Hobbes argument, firstly, we have to grasp Hobbesian world of pre-society, the State of Nature. For Hobbes, the State of Nature is a state of war, in which everyone regards one another as ememies, opposing against each other. In such situation, there is no guarantee that one can keep his or her own possessions constantly; also, there is no justice and injustice because no law has been established. Hobbess arguments are as following. Firstly, Bobbes pointed out a biological observation that everyone naturally has nearly equal faculties of body and mind, as a fundamental fact in the State of Natue. Even though we may find some people who are seemed stronger or smarter than the others, Hobbes added that if we count all abilities that everyone have by nature, we will find that everyone has quite equal abilities on averge. Besides, some may argue that some outstanding people, such as top scientists, have more abilities than the vulgur. However, Hobbes said, they attain their achievements not because of their more abilities than the others but because of their hard working in a long time; thus we cannot take their stories as the disproof that people do not have equal abilities by nature. In addition, Hobbes indicated that people always regard themselves being better than the others and this belief also can be taken as the evidence of peoples equality in natural faculties. From equality of abilities, hope and diffidence arise at the same time. On the one hand, since everyone has equal abilities, people naturally think they have chance to gain what they desire, so they persuit what they want actively. However, when two people desire the same thing and they cannot share it together, they will regard each other as opponent and enemy. Once the opposite state continues, it will be gradually extended to wrose situation in which everyone wants to destroy one another for his or her own conservation or pleasure. Hobbes concluded that there are three causes of quarrels: competition for gaining thing, diffidence for own conservation, and glory for reputation. In short, Hobbes claimed that with equal faculties, everyone has even opportunities to get what they want. However, because living resources are limited, it results in avoidlessly intense competitions among mankind. With consciousness that the others may have chances to get things we desire, we are commonly in an uneasy mental state. Since there is no arranged order or reasonable distribution in the state of nature, the best way to ensure ones living is to make efforts to get things as many as one can. What one is capable of obtaining is ones, no matter with what kind of methods, and that is why Bobbes said that force and fraud are two crucial virtues in the State of Nature, not justice. In the State of Nature, there is neither yours and mine, nor right and wrong. People do not have their respective legal possessions as their property. Everyone has to fight constantly to overcome their diffidence and earn their living. There is no justice and injustice because there is no law in the State of Nature. Property, justice and injustice, if they do exist, they will exist in the agreements of the members of a civil society. When people find that they can live in a more stable and peaceful state by composing society, they decide to consult with each other, set some social contracts besed on their mutual profits and transfer their right to the ruler. In this way, people start a recognized game in society and everyone who joins the game has to obey the commom rules, i.e., the laws. Then, we will have property, justice, and injustice. Locke provided a different interpretation of the origin of property, justice and injustice from Hobbes. Locke pointed that there are property, justice and injustice in the State of Nature, which are all protected by the law of nature. The State of Nature is governed by the law of nature, which ensures that property, justice and injustice exist in the State of Nature. Compared with Hobbesian State of Nature, Lockeian State of Nature is much more comfortable. It is a state of freedom in which people can decide their actions and deal with their possessions. It is also a state of equalty in wich people have reciprocal power and can share the same advantage of nature and mutual love. We have freedom and equality by nature, and both are from God. We are made by God. Because God prefer his creature to last during his pleasure, God gives us the rights to preserve ourselves. Following Gods will, we also have to preserve the other people, it means, we cannot invade the others unless we are offended. The law of nature can ensure peoples basic right, such as properties, liberty and so on, and restraint people to use their freedom to harm the others, unless out of lawful punishment. In sum, in the State of Nature, property, justice and injustice are all ensured by the law of nature. We can work hard to get what we desire and claim that we possess those things as our property. We can also judge what is just or injust according for everyones own conservation. After examining the theories of Hobbes and Locke, I think they both have some weak points in their arguments. Hobbes premise based on too many psychological suppositions and Lockes was out of religious belief. Hobbes pointed out that mankind are equal in both physical and mental abilities and he said we can find the proof from the fact that people always regard themselves as the best one. I think that this was just his subjective viewpoint. As for Locke, if one does not believe in God, then, the whole argument will not be set up. I prefer Lockes position, because I think even though Hobbes argument is reasonable in some points about mankinds competition, in his argument, mankind has no reason and just like animals in the jungle. Lockes position, in which mankind is free and equal, is more consisting with reason and would be a more stable basis for modern society.

Political Corruption Essay
Politics are the heart and sole of the American government. Without representatives in our government the people would not have a say. Although the American public has a say, does it really count? The fact of the matter is, the corruption and sleaziness involved in politics can shade the publicââ¬â¢s outcry and their voices will not be heard. As Americans, we need to be selective in who we elect to office. As my political cartoon portrays, America is being run by corporations instead of officials. Still no change to this problem has been made. Over the last few years, the issue of corruption (the abuse of public office for private gain) has attracted renewed interest, both among academics and policymakers. There are a number of reasons why this topic has come under recent inspection. Corruption scandals have toppled governments in both major industrial countries and developing countries. In the transition countries, the shift from command economies to free market economies has cre ated massive opportunities for the appropriation of rents, excessive profits, wealthy entrepreneurs and has often been accompanied by a change from a ââ¬Å"well-organizedâ⬠system of corruption to a more chaotic and toxic one. With the end of the cold war, donor countries have placed less emphasis on political considerations in distributing foreign aid among developing countries and have paid more attention to cases in which aid funds have been misused and have not reached the poor. Corruption is now being dragged into corporations. As campaigns are now in more and more need of money, the wealthy corporations such as Exxon Mobile and Goldman Sachs, have begun running the government by helping to elect state and federal officials. With this power corporations can begin to take advantage of democracy and begin to pass laws that will benefit their company. In history many scandals involving corruption have existed, it is a prominent problem for the United States and anyplace where power can be sought out. Human nature drags us into these problems due to the lust for power and there isnââ¬â¢t a clear solution only temporary ones. Corruption, dishonest, stealing, bribery, fraud and deception are all synonyms for what corporate funding has made of our government. Despite the reformation and establishment of freedom our government has made, the effects of corporate corruption have ruined our portrayal as a country of freedom and equality. Political cartoons are often necessary to embellish what is wrong in America. The wrongdoings are exaggerated andà catch the readerââ¬â¢s attention to attempt to pass along a message. The corruption depicted in this particular cartoon helps show the American public that the corporations are negatively portraying society. The leadership within our government now belongs to the multi-million dollar corporations that fund our senators, representatives and even ties to our president, Barack Obama, exist. Corporations now go shopping at the ââ¬Å"Congressman, Senators and Beyondâ⬠to try and fund the most likely candidate to win and supply them with what they want. Recently a scandal involving our own governor, Rod Blagojevich, and Tony Rezko, has shown that corruption exists and threatens American democracy. Elected officials are intended to represent the public. With corrupt official the American public will not trust the government nor be properly represented. Kickbacks from the local and federal government, although easier to detect compared to the past, are the major source of corruption. Rezko and other entrepreneurs involving public facilities, seek out politicians, to grant them permits. The corporations charge double the actual cost and keep the rest for themselves. This is how many of elected officials gain corporate funding. As the cartoon shows, corporations are really the controls behind the congressmen while he is only a ââ¬Å"figure headâ⬠for the company. The argument facing corporate sponsorships in campaigns is that this helps to keep normal people from sponsoring the politicians in return for job positions. This way of gaining campaign money originated from the Spoils System during the 1800ââ¬â¢s. Politicians promised jobs to people that generously donated money to their campaign and strongly represented the nominee. This was somewhat working until a president, Grover Cleveland, was shot from a deranged campaign donor that didnââ¬â¢t receive a job. The Spoils System was removed and the idea of corporations donating to nominees was put into pl ace. Although this solved the general public from being upset about noon-appointments, it created a large scale of corruption and dishonesty within our government. The development of corporate corruption has deterred the common public but still, employees and friends within the company end up on state boards and under governmental jobs anyhow. So the solution of corporate donations has not worked at all. Not only has this ââ¬Å"solutionâ⬠developed a negative portrayal of American democracy, it has also slowed down the progress of our governmental officials in completingà important issues. The development of corruption has burdened non-corrupt congressman and has created a goose hunt for the federal government and its programs. The real attention needs to be on internal affairs and international relations. Conclusion: Corruption within our government means more than this single cartoon can portray but still reveals change is needed. The change needs to come swiftly and in a harsh manner in order to maintain our democratic, ââ¬Å"American Dreamâ⬠portrayal. As the government moves onto international affairs and problems facing our economy, corruption needs to have a set limit. Donations need to be limited and their control over politics needs to be put to a stop. As President Obamaââ¬â¢s inaugural speech dictated, ââ¬Å"A New Birth of Freedom,â⬠[from corruption] must be brought forward.
